Our 2030 Strategy builds on and improves our legacy of work, such as our industry defining roadmaps, which were created to help define the political and industry pathways to net zero carbon and resilience by 2050. Working with our members and partners, we’ll continue to co-create innovative policies, frameworks, toolkits and standards to help shift the dial ever-faster towards action and implementation.

UKGBC’s strength lies in our members, and in our convening power and our shared belief that systemic change is both necessary and possible. So, as set out in this document, over the next five years our mission will help us push past the inertia of short-termism and help industry unlock the transformation required. Not just for our buildings, but also for a healthier and happier society over the longer term.”

Simon McWhirter, Chief Executive of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥

Our Strategic Goals

1: A Shared Sustainability Vision

Foster collaboration and consensus across sector

2: Moving from Intent to Action

Biodiversity Net Gain Masterclass (Virtual) /events/biodiversity-net-gain-masterclass-virtual/ Tue, 10 Feb 2026 15:31:01 +0000 /?post_type=event&p=69223 A masterclass on Biodiversity Net Gain in England, exploring what it means, its importance and methods of implementation and measurement.

The post Biodiversity Net Gain Masterclass (Virtual) appeared first on UKGBC.

]]>
Alongside the climate crisis, we face an ecological crisis in which biodiversity in the UK is under severe and urgent threat. With 50% of the UK’s economy linked to nature and the UK one of the most biodiversity depleted countries in the world, restoring our natural environments is critical to building our future green economy.

This masterclass will help you understand and begin to implement the new Biodiversity Net Gain requirements set out in the Government’s Environment Act.

There are huge opportunities for the built environment to restore nature and build more regenerative towns and cities – this masterclass will support you to do that.

About the course

This half-day masterclass will deep dive into Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in the built environment. Focusing on the legislation and policy context in England, this course will help delegates understand the drivers behind BNG and how to achieve and surpass the mandated minimum 10% biodiversity uplift in new project.

The course will cover the need for biodiversity recovery in general across England, contextualised against the climate and biodiversity crises. We’ll look at the principles and basics of BNG – what is BNG? Why does it matter? How is it measured?

We’ll move on to explore the regulatory drivers for BNG with a focus on translating the Environment Act, 2021 and covering how a number of major local authorities apply the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and their own policies on BNG. Finally, we’ll cover the process of BNG from start to finish, picking up the practical steps needed within planning and construction, including how to design for BNG through green infrastructure design.

The course will be interactive and discursive, giving you a chance to discuss BNG issues with colleagues from across the UKGBC membership, and our subject-matter expert.

The course will

Explain the importance

of biodiversity and threats posed to nature from the built environment.

Help you develop an understanding

of how the biodiversity and climate crises intersect

Walk through

exactly what biodiversity net gain is, explaining the policy and legislative drivers relating to BNG

Introduce methods

for calculating BNG on development projects

Highlight key considerations

for developers relating to BNG within the design and delivery of new development

Help you understand

the concepts of green infrastructure (GI), nature-based solutions (NBS) and how these can be used to achieve Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

Share case study references

to show how BNG can be delivered effectively.

Who’s it for?

This masterclass is for developers, planners, architects, landscape architects, and any other planning/environmental professionals who need to know more about BNG within planning in England.

Why join the course?

Learn more about the important of nature and biodiversity to people and communities
Understand BNG legislation and the process – what is it? Why does it matter? How is it measured?
Meet and network others across industry working on BNG

Other dates

28th May – 13:30-17:00 (London)

About this event

The site tour will kick off with short presentations to set out key concepts and the thinking behind the project, followed by tours of the building itself to explore practical examples of embodied carbon solutions. Afterwards there will be a networking session and drinks with industry peers.

is a new hybrid structure office building in Vauxhall. The building uses mass timber, with CLT floors and glulam beams – upfront embodied carbon is calculated to be 413 kgCO2e/m2. The structure is designed to be demountable to enable reuse of building elements in future buildings, and is heated and cooled using air-source heat pumps.

Despite being a significant source of carbon emissions in the UK, embodied carbon emissions are currently unregulated, and measurement and mitigation within construction is typically voluntary. As highlighted by UKGBC’s Net Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap, the accurate and consistent measurement and reporting of embodied carbon has become increasingly important to ensure meaningful and credible progress towards net zero carbon goals.

To achieve this, it’s essential that embodied carbon moves quickly from being a challenge only addressed by leading organisations, to one that is tackled by stakeholders across the built environment industry.

Check out UKGBC’s Improving your modelling and reporting embodied carbon guidance for industry professionals, and Practical Guidance for writing a project brief for embodied carbon assessments.

About this event

This site tour will kick off with short presentations to set out key concepts and the thinking behind the project, followed by tours of the building itself to explore practical examples of deep retrofit solutions. Afterwards there will be a networking session with industry peers, with light lunch and drinks provided.

Join UKGBC on a visit to Coal House, a deep retrofit office building in Cardiff City Centre with BREEAM Excellent and SKA Gold.Ìý

Coal House is a four-story office building located in Cardiff city centre with 30,000sq ft of net internal area. Vacant possession of the property in 2022 presented an opportunity to retrofit the building to maximise the sustainability whilst creating a vibrant and engaging workspace that also provides improved facilities for occupants and enhances user wellbeing.Ìý

There are growing regulatory and commercial risks associated with older, less energy-efficient buildings – particularly in the office market. As our awareness of the need to decarbonise our built environment grows, it is becoming clear that retrofitting existing buildings results in lower whole life carbon emissions than demolition and new build, whilst reducing the wider ecological impacts of construction waste and resource usage. Deep retrofit is able to achieve significant cuts in operational energy use (60-65%+), transition buildings away from fossil fuels, and meet best practice 2030-2035 energy performance targets for offices. (UKGBC Building the Case for Net Zero: Retrofitting Office Buildings).Ìý

To minimise the embodied carbon impact, the structure at Coal House was maintained and, instead, the building underwent an exterior refurbishment with solar PV and solar shading installed. The core plant and all heating and ventilation equipment were replaced. Alongside this, technologically integrated variable air flow valves were included which enabled automated air quality management on a localised basis. The lighting was upgraded to new, highly-efficient LED systems.Ìý

To support the ongoing running of the building, a new building management system (BMS) was installed, integrating a smart building server, sensors, access and visitor management systems. Furthermore, a building app called Coalhouse.life was introduced to facilitate interaction between the smart technology, building amenity and the building occupants.Ìý

Coal House featured as a case study in UKGBC’s report, Building the Case for Net Zero: Retrofitting Office Buildings. Visit page 56 for information about Coal House.Ìý

Why attend
