Innovation in Commercial Retrofit: A Live Project Demonstrator

Be among the first to explore our new report, detailing the collaborative project with Breakthrough Energy and FORE Partnership which saw the first practical application of the Commercial Retrofit Innovation Map. The Map was central to the process the team followed in the transformation the iconic No. 1 Poultry building in the City of London, using it as a live, real-world showcase for innovative retrofit solutions.
In September 2025, the Commercial Retrofit Innovation Map was launched as part of the collaborative project, and this new report builds on that foundation. It details the practical way the map was applied within a live project environment, outlining a repeatable, step-by-step approach to the innovation review and selection process.
Providing a tough test case to tackle, No. 1 Poultry is one of the City of London’s most recognisable landmark buildings and the final work of renowned architect James Stirling. Its scale, complexity and prominence make it a powerful showcase for innovation, demonstrating how sustainable solutions can be integrated into real-world commercial assets. The report also details the decision making influences and criteria on the project, as well as the list of solutions selected.Â
By making both the process and solutions visible, the project aims to support wider adoption across the industry, helping teams embed innovative solutions with greater confidence.
