The transition to a net zero, regenerative built environment will not be delivered by incremental policy change alone. It requires bold leadership, systems thinking and collaboration across the value chain. The Policy Forum is a space for political dialogue, horizon scanning and long-term thinking, all grounded in practical experience and focused on impact.

It brings together expert representatives from approximately 20 organisations from across our membership to:

  • Explore policy solutions that can unlock rapid decarbonisation and wider sustainability outcomes.
  • Apply systems thinking and long-term approaches to enable industry transformation.
  • Identify where policy needs to shift to meet climate and environment goals.
  • Engage directly with policymakers, including Westminster-based discussions.

The Forum meets quarterly (one in-person session in London and three online) and operates under the Chatham House Rule to enable open, honest discussion. These meetings will inform UKGBC’s advocacy, campaigns and thought leadership across the built environment

What will the Forum work on?

While specific priorities will evolve based on member expertise and emerging policy developments, potential areas of focus include:

Embodied Carbon

Future Homes Standard and what comes next

Nature Policy

Resilience and Adaptation

Domestic and Commercial Retrofit

Who Should Apply?

The Forum is open to applications from named individuals within UKGBC member organisations. We are seeking representation from across the built environment value chain – including clients, developers, designers, contractors, operators, investors and strategic advisors – alongside systems thinkers and policy specialists. Participants are selected based on:
  • Understanding of systems thinking, transitional dynamics, and/or long-term strategic approaches.
  • Ability to contribute constructively to high-level policy-related dialogue.
  • Commitment to accelerating broad sustainability outcomes across the industry.

Please note this does require an application, and we want to ensure good representation across our membership and industry for which there are limited Forum spaces.

This route is ideal for individuals who

Want to actively help shape the policy landscape

Bring deep subject expertise and strategic insight

Are ready to engage seriously with transformative policy thinking

Become a Policy Forum Partner

We’re also looking for Policy Forum Partners to have an active role in discussion while visibly championing pogressive built environment policy. It includes:

What if, every time we built or retrofitted something, the communities and ecosystems around us got better? This is a goal few would disagree with, but of course the question is how?

The Regenerative Places Framework Task Group will explore this crucially important challenge, building the compelling case to industry and policy makers for the benefits of place-based regenerative approaches, and examining the pathways, approaches, and shifts in practice needed to achieve more regenerative outcomes on projects.

The Task Group will consider how regenerative approaches can be applied to the retrofit of existing homes and communities at scale, and additional housing that meets local community needs and aspirations. Informed by UKGBC’s Regenerative Places programme, including the Local Authority Retrofit Accelerator pilot projects delivered by The MCS Foundation, this project aims to develop guidance for industry and policy makers on how to embed regenerative approaches into projects from the earliest design stages, delivering tangible social, environmental and long-term economic value. With nearly 19 million poorly rated homes and interconnected housing and climate challenges, there’s a pressing need for transformative action.

The project aims to:

Clarify and define

place-based regenerative approaches through a shared industry language to guide better decision-making and project outcomes

Explore

the real-world social, environmental and long-term economic benefits of embedding regenerative principles, equipping stakeholders to advocate for and adopt these approaches.

Provide guidance

on how to embed regenerative principles early in retrofit and housing development-focused projects as a catalyst for wider community and ecosystem benefits.

Task Group Purpose

The Task Group will contribute significantly to the project’s core content. It will ensure that the guidance builds on existing industry knowledge and initiatives and that the output is of a quality and form that is practicable to the intended industry professionals. We will therefore be seeking a level of knowledge and understanding of existing/emerging related industry initiatives.

To address the wide range of local benefits to regenerative approaches, and in line with this project’s systems-led and place-based approach, we are keen to involve representatives from non-member organisations that are part of wider stakeholder ecosystems. These include, but are not limited to:

  • National community organisations / networks (including community energy, community land trusts, housing and tenant associations, and social justice advocates)
  • National wildlife and environmental organisations / networks
  • Training and skills providers
  • Public health bodies
  • Energy generation and supply organisations

By joining our Task Group, your organisation will:

Shape the project

and associated outputs, as well as how these outputs are conveyed to industry to maximise impact and uptake

Collaborate

with other industry leaders in this space and build your organisation’s network

Receive brand recognition

on final project-related outputs

Receive bespoke social media assets

to help promote your organisation’s support of the project

Help Shape the Future of UKGBC – Join the Membership Advisory Group

The Membership Advisory Group (MAG) brings together a diverse mix of UKGBC members to help shape the future of our network. This is your opportunity to share insights, spark ideas, and influence how we grow and support our community.

In the Membership Advisory Group you will:

  • Represent the voice of the wider membership.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our membership structure, fees, and benefits.
  • Collaborate early in the development of new ideas and initiatives.
  • Support UKGBC’s mission to drive industry transformation and deliver impact.

Whilst the Membership Advisory Group (MAG) is an advisory group with no formal governance role, its influence is significant. Your input will help guide UKGBC’s strategic direction and ensure we continue to meet our charitable objectives.

This isn’t just a sounding board, it’s a space for forward-thinking, proactive members who want to make a difference.

What’s Expected of MAG Members

Joining the Membership Advisory Group means playing a key role in shaping UKGBC’s future. Here’s what we ask of the MAG.

Be a strategic voice

Share operational and strategic advice that reflect your organisation and sub-sector.

Champion UKGBC

Represent and promote our mission, vision, and impact across the industry.

Hold a senior role

Members should be in leadership positions (e.g. Head, Director, Senior Manager, Principal) within a UKGBC member organisation.

Commit to a 2-year term

After two years, members will be invited to recommit and continue their contribution.

Make time

Expect to dedicate around 2 hours per month to meetings and related work.

Stay engaged

The role is personal and non-transferable, through substitutions may be made with UKGBC’s prior agreement.
I participate in the UKGBC’s member advisory group because I believe in it’s vital role as a leading voice for sustainability in our built environment. Being part of this group gives me a unique opportunity to influence the direction of an organisation that’s instrumental in transforming our industry. I’d encourage others to join to ensure we maintain the rich diversity of voices that makes the UKGBC so effective, and to actively shape how members will collaborate to address the urgent environmental challenges we face.

The term nature-positive has gained a lot of traction recently and is used frequently in the built environment industry. However, in absence of clear definitions, it can easily be misused, and even give way to unintentional greenwashing.

This project will create a framework on the applicability of this terminology for the built environment specifically, with a set of criteria to be required. This would ensure that projects and companies stick to a high standard when using this terminology. The project will clarify to what degree buildings, project, or companies can be described as nature-positive, and under which circumstances.Ìý

This consultation is a broad call for input to ensure that the Framework is robust, relevant and widely supported.
