Our 2030 Strategy builds on and improves our legacy of work, such as our industry defining roadmaps, which were created to help define the political and industry pathways to net zero carbon and resilience by 2050. Working with our members and partners, we’ll continue to co-create innovative policies, frameworks, toolkits and standards to help shift the dial ever-faster towards action and implementation.

UKGBC’s strength lies in our members, and in our convening power and our shared belief that systemic change is both necessary and possible. So, as set out in this document, over the next five years our mission will help us push past the inertia of short-termism and help industry unlock the transformation required. Not just for our buildings, but also for a healthier and happier society over the longer term.”

Simon McWhirter, Chief Executive of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥

UKGBC’s Impact Report 22-23 documents the transformational impact our network had over a financial year with collaboration at its heart. Its the first of our Impact Reports to track our activities in line with our 2025 strategy and goals, with the aims pushing for climate action further and faster.

This financial year saw the launch of new opportunities for radical collaboration between our members, like the Collaboration Cafés and Local Authority Retrofit Forum, providing spaces and networks for knowledge sharing and problem solving. Circular Economy was central in this year’s Advancing Net Zero programme, with the release of two industry leading reports and a record number of individuals being involved in ANZ work. This financial year also saw us hit the milestone of 700 members, with over 9,000 active member contacts.

As the final year of Julie Hirigoyen’s leadership, it was a year where our industry and society at large grappled with the climate and ecological crises; epitomised by the reaction to the extreme heat of summer 2022. Progress is being made across the built environment, but we must take the impact from this year and accelerate it in both business and government if we are to avert climate and ecological breakdown.

UKGBC’s Impact Report FY 21-22 showcases the transformative impact we delivered in the year of COP26. With an expanding team, we hit the milestone of 600 members and continued to excel across our programmes. A key stand out was the publication of the sector-leading Net Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap, as well as the launch of UKGBC Scotland to formalise our work in the devolved nation.

The call for climate action is stronger than ever amongst both business and government, and commitments to changing the status quo have exploded in this past year. However, we still have a long way to go, and as the 2030 target for halving our emissions looms on the horizon we’re acutely aware of the work that still needs to be done. Therefore, as we look ahead to the following year we’re focusing on capitalising the collective voice of our members as we push for change, further, faster.

The climate emergency remains the most pressing issue facing the built environment. It is directly responsible for 25% of total UK emissions, and as evidenced by UKGBC’s Net Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap, continuing a ‘business-as-usual’ approach will simply not deliver net zero by 2050. Instead, the current pace of climate action will only deliver a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide levels compared with 1990 emissions levels; leading to catastrophic and irreversible impacts, adversely affecting lives, livelihoods, and the planet.

Therefore, the choices we, as an industry, make now to halve our emissions by 2030 are critical. That’s why at UKGBC we’ve decided to create a new 2025 Strategy, to ensure all our activities are on track for the future we want to build.

The UKGBC 2025 Strategy sets out a shared industry ambition and industry targets which indicate what must be achieved by 2025. Drawn from science-based data modelling conducted for our Whole Life Net Zero Carbon Roadmap published in 2021, the Strategy also points to shared targets that have yet to be developed for both climate resilience and environmental net gain. This is ultimately where the built environment sector needs to get to. To drive progress towards these, UKGBC has set itself seven clear goals in relation to both Government and Businesses that will drive the transformational shift in the way we design, construct, operate and reuse built assets to achieve the industry ambition and targets.  The goals will in turn inform and cascade into the key work priorities that UKGBC takes forward over the next three years.

2021 was a critical year for the climate and ecological agendas & although progress was made at both domestic and international levels, the need for increased ambition and the translation of commitments into tangible and measurable action has never been greater.

What does this Strategy mean for our Members?

In addition to the release of the 2025 Strategy, UKGBC has also evolved our work programme to create even more opportunities for engagement and impactful collaboration, both inside member organisations and more widely across the industry. Through these, our members will:

  • Be empowered to accelerate their own sustainability journeys by participating in UKGBC convened initiatives and projects – where we unite around a common purpose, collaborate, share knowledge and lessons learnt.
  • Enjoy access to cutting edge insights and solutions that will shortcut your learning journeys.
  • Be engaged and consulted to evolve definitions of ‘what good looks like’ and to showcase your remarkable achievements as sustainability pioneers.
  • Equip their teams with the knowledge, skills, capabilities and leadership mindsets that they need to radically transform their business models.
  • Unite as a progressive and united voice to those in positions of power – demonstrating the art of the possible and calling on government to change the rules of the game.
  • Be part of a network with influence across all corners of the UK – with a specific focus on devolved nations and areas identified as priorities for the Levelling Up agenda.

The past year’s events have had unexpected consequences with issues on climate change, nature & biodiversity, health & wellbeing, social inequality and quality of life being skyrocketed up the agenda. As we look ahead to COP26 we intend to capitalise on this unprecedented momentum and accelerate our efforts to achieve meaningful action.

Our 2021/22 annual operating plan is based on four strategic priorities:

  • Leverage COP26 to drive up ambition and commitment to climate mitigation and adaptation across the whole property and construction industry and to strengthen key elements of the UK Government’s built environment policy
  • Accelerate leadership and action, primarily by businesses and government (national and local), towards more sustainable built environment outcomes
  • Convene cross-sector collaboration, facilitating connections and meaningful partnerships to scale up the adoption of sustainable outcomes and solutions
  • Extend our membership network and activities across the UK, with a particular focus on Scotland in advance of the COP26 conference in November 2021

We have significant programmes of work planned for each of the following impact areas, all of which provide ample opportunities for members to get actively involved:

  • Advancing net zero carbon
  • Climate resilience and nature-based solutions
  • Circular economy
  • Social value, including health and wellbeing

UKGBC’s Impact Report FY2019-20 profiles some of our achievements over the last financial year: our membership community grew to its highest ever level; thousands took part in our learning and leadership work; and our messages gained more traction in the media than ever before.

We ended the last FY contemplating an uncertain future and how we can achieve our outcomes whilst recovering from a global pandemic, however we are quietly confident a tipping point for climate action has been reached. The direction of travel is firmly set, it just remains for us to accelerate.
